Abstract:
Purpose:
After the first distal pancreatectomies were performed by Billroth in 1884 1 and by Finney 1 and Mayo, 2 the high incidence of perioperative morbidity and death suggested that this procedure should be abandoned. 3 Nevertheless, over the last few decades, surgical and medical improvements allowed a progressive decrease in morbidity and mortality rates linked to distal pancreatectomy, as described by Fernandez del Castillo et al 4 in 1990.
